Beyond the farmers’ fields and where the tall grasses grow is a place mice fear to tread. Even the sort of mouse who has adventures thinks twice about a visit to this place. Out on that windswept plain is a lonesome chunk of grey tourmaline, skull shaped and etched with a symbol reflecting eerie hues of pink and blue. A gnarled, dead tree clings to that stone, and between its dry roots, a dark crevice just big enough for a brave mouse to squeeze through.
Somewhere down there, a mouse can confront their innermost selves. Wisemice say that it hides — or reveals, depending on a certain point of view — only what a mouse takes with them. Most of those who venture off to learn whatever this place can teach them never make it back. The few who do return are forever changed. With a distant look in their eyes or a hollow sound in their voice, they have experienced the truly unimaginable.
No one knows what this place is named. Some call it Skull Rock, some the Stone of Fears, and others are too afraid to label it at all. Its real name is lost to the winds of time. Maybe, if one listens closely, though, it can be heard whispered on a soft summer breeze … Bahimmar-Ilum.
